Ghent is the historical city in Flanders where Leo Baekeland lived, studied and worked for twenty-six years. That is nearly one third of his life. It is also in Ghent that he met and married his wife Céline Swarts, the daughter of his professor. In Ghent was born their first child Jenny Baekeland, who deceased in the US at the age of five.
